Chapel: Man in the Mirror.... Part One

All he ever needed was sixty seconds, and an inattentive, distracted mother to turn away from her young, only for a minute. An innocent looking hand holding a piece of candy extending from a semi darkened hallway, or a shadowy alley. Candy, the perfect bait for an eager child. Just sixty precious seconds. That’s all it usually took him to whisk them away- to cover their mouths with an ether soaked cloth to foil any resistance. He was always so clever, so cunning, each step carefully planned leading up to each abduction. All she had to do was to turn away, let go of that tiny little hand for just a minute, and he would have them. And a distraught mother would never see her child alive again. For six long perilous months, he would haunt the city of King‘s Harbor, moving through shadows on the fringes of society, stealing its young away, like a thief in the night, leaving nary a trace for the police to find. He was so careful, meticulous, five months and counting. Parents everywhere; fearful for the safety of their young. fearful of someone that no one had ever even seen, a ghost, whose name was only mentioned in carefully guarded whispers. “Hold their hands tightly, then pick them up and run, for the Candyman is coming- for all the little ones.”

King’s Harbor Present day.
He passed by the entrance to the Delorian Street cathedral several times, trying to muster the courage to enter. It was almost to the point where people on the street were beginning to take notice of his quirky behavior. He was pacing back and forth, nervously stopping three times to smoke a cigarette. The crowded sidewalks slowly thinned out, then the rain returned. Morning slowly drifted into afternoon when finally; not without some trepidation, he slowly entered the cathedral. Father Michael McMillan greeted him at the door, hands in front of him. The priest approached the large broad shouldered black man almost cautiously as he introduced himself extending his hand.

“Father- my name is Delmar Eckley I’m a reporter from the Tribune, I was hoping for a moment of your time sir.”

He nodded. Motioning towards an empty pew. Both men sat.

“Father I’m going to cut right to the chase. I’ve been talking to some of the people in this neighborhood and I’ve been told by more than a few that you have a rather unique resident living on one of the deserted upper floors of the cathedral. I was hoping to get your permission to go up there and investigate these rumors personally.”

Father McMillan’s eyes slowly rolled toward the ceiling. He slowly rose to his feet and began pacing back and forth nervously, both hands clasped behind his back. He gave the reporter a stern look, giving the request careful consideration before answering. He stopped and sat back down in the pew.

“There are many unique residents that dwell here in the Delorian Cathedral my son. We all do God’s work in some way or another. What is your particular interest in our angel?”

“Well- with all due respect Father McMillan, I don’t know that I would call it an angel exactly, but I give you my word that I will reserve such judgments until after I’ve seen it with my own two eyes. And, as for my interest in it or them- well it‘s strictly professional, I can assure you.”

He held up a folder stuffed full of papers.

“Like I said Father. It’s strictly a professional visit.”

Without another word they both stood and Father McMillan lead him down a long dark corridor leading to two large wooden double doors secured with several different dead bolt locks. Delmar Eckley gave him a curious look.

“Trying to keep the angel locked out of the church? Some might consider that an odd practice Father.”

He gave the reporter a sideways glance.

“Not to keep him from us my son, but to keep the outside world from him.”

He pushed the double doors open and lead Delmar Eckley into the darkened stairwell. It extended up ten floors right through the middle of the cathedral in a long almost circular pattern. He almost got a kink in his neck from looking straight up at the upper floors. The father patted him on the shoulder.

“I haven’t heard a peep out of him in the past few months but he’s been stirring lately, so I’d say where ever he’s been hiding, he’s home now.” His eyes returned to Delmar Eckley. “He’s usually on the very top floor. Good luck young man.” He turned to walk back through the door until Eckley stopped him.

“Father?”

He turned to face him.

“Have you ever actually seen this- angel? You know, with your own two eyes?”

He walked over, stopping in front of the stairwell he looked up at Eckley.

“No, I’ve never actually come face to face with the almighty either son.” He smiled. “But I have seen his work.” He turned and walked through the door. Delmar Eckley began the long climb to the top floor of the Delorian Cathedral.

The higher he climbed the stairs, the darker it seemed to get. He found it to be more than a little unsettling. By the time he reached the 11th floor he was almost out of breath. It was dark and had an almost musky feel to it. The wooden floor boards were covered in dust and there wasn’t much up there except a few birds living in the rafters and a few empty wooden crates scattered across the empty floor. He sat down on one of the wooden crates trying to catch his breath, all the while his eyes scanning the entire darkened room searching for any signs of movement. The words of Father Michael McMillan suddenly rang in his ears.

“I’ve never actually came face to face with the almighty either son, but I have seen his work.”

“Okay. Look man- here’s the deal. First off, I’m not a cop or anything. I’m just a reporter for the Tribune. I’m not here looking for a story, I’m here looking for help. I know that you’re real, because I have been following your work closely. With Theo Cousins. With the whack job of a cop that you took care of. No sir- like the man said. I don’t have to actually see you to know that your real. I also know that you’ve been away for awhile, so maybe you haven’t seen or heard about what’s been happening to this city in your absence.”

He strained against the sound of falling rain beating softly against the sides of the cathedral. There were no signs of any movement- no sounds. He wondered for a moment if he was perhaps too late in coming here. He ran his fingers through his hair. He leaned forward and lay the folder of papers on one of the empty crates. His eyes were almost welling with tears.

“You see man- in my business they’re always telling us to not get personally involved with a story, we aren‘t allowed to let our emotions get in the way. But man. How can I not care about- children? He’s taking the children. Killing them. He appears and disappears without a trace. And the police? God help them, but they don’t have a clue- it’s like they’re chasing a ghost or something. This folder that I’m gonna leave here with you- it’s everything that I’ve managed to track down on the Candyman in the past 6 months. It isn’t much, but, there are pictures of his victims and I’ve managed to get a few crime scene photo’s after the police released the scene’s. I’m just gonna leave it here with you, please? Just look at it?”

Fearful that he would receive no answer, he stood up, drew in a deep breath, and then turned toward the stairwell, pausing briefly to look down at the folder. He headed for the stairs never seeing the hand extending from the shadows, picking up the folder and opening it. A deep, cold emotionless voice echoed across the empty room and it froze him in his tracks.

“How many children exactly?”

Delmar Eckley slowly turned around, his eyes nervously darting back and forth fighting through the darkness. He could feel a lump beginning to form in his throat, his stomach muscles tightened.

“Ummmm. Seven. In almost six months, five months and thirty days to be exact.” Eckley answered.
He was leaning forward trying to see who he was talking to.

A tall dark figure slowly emerged from the shadows and walked over to where the smallest sliver of light came shining through a broken window. He knelt down and pushed two of the wooden crates together and began laying the pictures of the children down on them. Eckley inched his way closer, nervously looking him up and down.

“I went to all of their funerals man. Stared into the eyes of their parents. I felt their loss and pain, I just can’t help it. It’s personal now.”

His eyes carefully moved from one photo to the next with Eckley cautiously inching his way closer to him. He could see it in his eyes something had already captured his attention. Now he pushed aside his uneasiness and moved up beside of him.

“You see something in the pictures, do you?” He asked.

“Tell me everything you know. Start at the beginning. Leave nothing out. Where does he take them from?”

“Some were taken from inside of the buildings they lived in, some were taken from just outside. They think that he waits until the parent becomes distracted and then lures the child away with candy. In each case it took him just a minute to snatch the kids away and disappear into thin air.”

He tapped on the picture with his forefinger, looking at Eckley.

“What are these marks on the child’s face?”

“Uhhhh yeah, that’s a pic I got from a cop friend of mine, the police think that once he has the child- he covers their mouths with a rag soaked in ether. Then he takes them to some remote area and does God only knows what to them, and then the next day they find the body close to where the child is taken from.”

He raised one of the pictures up to the light to inspect it more closely. Now he turned to face Eckley giving him a curious look. He turned his attention back to the photo.

“Is this the only photo you have that was taken right after the body was discovered?”

“Yeah a cop friend of mine took it. He gave it to me under the promise that I would never release it to my editor. Which of course I never would. Why? is it significant?”

“I’m gathering that they all died of suffocation but weren’t sexually molested?”

Eckley nodded to the affirmative.

“And he always takes them back to where he took them from?”

Again he nodded.

“What are you thinking?”

“Give me your phone number Mr. Eckley, and I’ll be calling you soon.”

“Wait- I never told you my name- how did you-”

He turned to face him fully then, face-to-face almost smiling.

“What? Do you think that I’m the type to not know when someone has been following me in my own neighborhood, and then not find out who it is?”

He picked up the pictures along with Eckley’s note and stuffed them back into the folder, and handed it to him.

Eckley scribbled down his cell number and handed it to him.

“At first impression, Mr. Eckley, I don’t think he’s a pedophile. There’s something a little deeper going on here. First off, even though he takes both boy and girls, the children in all of the pictures look similar and all possess feminine qualities. Something happened in this person’s past. It has scarred him deeply, mentally and emotionally. He may even be killing them by accident. I will get a better feel for it when I see the first crime scene.”

Chapel stepped up to the window and stared for a moment out at the looming storm clouds.

"It will be snowing soon,  he's not stupid, it will be more difficult for him to cover his tracks in snow, it may slow him down, cause him to consider his next move more carefully, that will buy us time to catch up, maybe even figure him out. there is more to this person than meets the eye, I have an idea, when I know more I'll need you to to do some leg work first, we'll have to do this together, or we won't catch him."

Eckley shook his hand and started to leave but stopped to look back at him.

“By the way- you know my name. so what’s yours?”

“You may call me Chapel.”

If I should die before I wake Parts 1 - 4 (Revised)

December 20th, 1944, 10 miles East of Bastogne Belgium.
He could remember being upright, handing a cigarette to Sgt. Avery Dutton, the next second he was wearing bits and pieces of Dutton’s body all over him as the whole world around them turned upside down and erupted into one giant ball of confusion and chaos as German mortar rounds rained down on them like it was the forth of July. Stunned, he staggered away from the maelstrom at first walking, stumbling and finally crawling through the woods away from the explosions. Anton Sipe hadn’t signed up for this, he was born in Germany but his parents whisked him away to live in New York City in America before he had even reached the age of one. He’d spent his entire life there, and when he’d turned 17 years old, he’d seen the writing on the wall. Germany was making some serious noise in Europe and it wouldn’t be long before the old man packed up the whole family and returned to the Fatherland, and Anton would be goose stepping his way up the ranks of the German army.

So he left home three days shy of his 18th birthday to join the American army. Now here he was, knee deep in a world of shit being shot to hell by the Fatherland. He closed his eyes tight, until he cold no longer hear the explosions roaring in the distance, he couldn’t feel the bitter cold of his own frost covered fingers, for all intensive purposes Anton Sipe may as well have been dead, but that was the problem- he wasn't. Near unconsciousness he almost willed himself to crawl forward, unaware of his surroundings then, there in the deep woods, he’d almost felt peaceful. And then a strange thing- “wait, what was that?” Something smelled different, felt, different. The strong sweet scent of perfume filled his senses. He rolled onto his back and the silhouette began to take shape above him and as two hands began to reach down towards him, 18 year old Anton Sipe had no way of knowing that the whole world that he’d thought he knew- was about to change forever.

His eyes flickered, and closed tight one last time, he could feel his body being dragged through the snow, and then it all went black.
“Do you know where you are?”
His head moved, but his eyes refused to open.
“N. No. No, I don’t want to go back to that hell. N.N. No please. Don’t make me.”
“Don’t be afraid. Open your eyes and see.”
Slowly he pulled his eyelids apart and looked up, she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.
She had creamy perfect skin, and wore a black gown that looked like it was made from the finest silk, her long black hair seem to flow like water around her shoulders. He blinked and tried to focus almost certain that he was hallucinating. She was smiling down at him. Her voice was soft, husky, warm, and she talked in an accent that he didn't recognize.
“I am Nastasia. My. My, what a lovely boy you are.”

Le diable dort ici
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was no pain, no sound now, only numbness, his eyes rolled around the room, it felt damp, and yet there was a warmness here that he couldn’t explain. He tried to sit up, but felt a stern hand resting on his chest pushing him slowly back into a laying position.
“No. Not yet. You are not strong enough yet. Relax. Rest now my pretty.”
He didn’t know where he was, and he wasn’t sure that he cared, he was completely alone with this beautiful woman. She was closer to him then, close enough for him to feel her breath on his neck, he suddenly felt cold again, colder than before. She slowly ran a long fingernail along the side of his cheek,
“It has been so long since we have had visitors here, so long since I have seen such a strong young man. You will help me. Yes?”
And as Anton Sipe looked up into her hypnotic gaze he suddenly realized that without even fully knowing her, that he would somehow find a way to do whatever she wanted him to.
He found it strange that somehow she was talking to him and yet her lips didn’t seem to move. He slowly pulled himself up into a seated position and could feel his legs moving both feet to the floor. She clasped her hand into his and led him down a long, dark corridor and into a dimly lit room, there were lit candles gently flickering in each corner. In the middle of the floor there was a long rectangular box. With a large golden cross embedded into the wooden top.
She stayed away, closer to the door, as he stumbled forward, inching his way closer to the box, he reached out and slowly ran his hands across the sleek black surface, there was fresh soil along the top, and as his eyes squinted in the dimly lit room he read the words inscribed at one end of the lid; “Le Diable dort ici.”
“W. Wait. What in the fuck are you doing here?”
“Open it.”
“What? Wait- what does that say? This could be very bad, this is- what? A coffin?”
“Open it.”
Almost as if he could no longer control his own actions he pushed the lid away, and gazed down inside of the coffin at the decaying corpse. He could hear her voice in his head. He felt himself weakening.
“Remove the cross from his chest and then the wooden stake.”
“What? Wait. No I shouldn’t be doing this. But. I. Can’t. Help. It.”
He first removed the heavy cross lying across the top of the corpse. And then wrapped his fingers around the wooden stake and slowly began to pull it from the chest. And when it suddenly popped free he felt his knees growing weak as he staggered backwards falling up against her, she wrapped her arms around him and he could see her smiling.
“At last. Rise and walk my love.”
Frail bony fingers grasped at the sides of the coffin, and when the white haired man rose from out of the box, somewhere in the back of his mind- in a place where his will was still at least partly his own, Anton Sipe began to fully realize that he had just done a terrible thing. A very terrible thing indeed
Vasille Vladu.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

They fed on him long through the night, not enough to kill him, just enough, to make him like them, though still weakened,the male seemed much stronger to him now, and he was careful enough not to take too much of Anton Sipe’s blood. Not too much, just enough to pull him into a lifetime of servitude to him and her. He was lying on his side when he opened his eyes and saw her- she was half naked sitting across from him, his own blood still warm, still fresh on her lips. He couldn’t see the male but definitely felt his presence.
“What have. You done to me?”
She rose and walked over to him, once again running her fingernails along his cheek. She knelt down and looked at him more directly than before.
“You belong to him now, as do I. he is our master.”
“He? Who is he?”
“He is Vasille Vladu. He is over three hundred and seventy five years old. And he is a Vampire. He has been sleeping for so long. I could not remove the cross or the stake. That is why I needed you. To do it for me.”

He could feel the chills shooting through his body as he tried to sit up and face her, she was smiling again this time moving closer to him. She brushed her hand across his cheek with a gentleness that seemed almost out of place.
He walked into the room just in time to see Sipe roll off of the table and onto the floor, his body shivering almost violently. Vasille looked much stronger than before, much more powerful, more sinister. He stood watching him slowly turning, slowly giving way to the primal urges that were building inside of him. His eyes were the first to show the signs, first turning a bright shade of pink and then finally a deep crimson red. And soon there would be the final piece of the puzzle, the overwhelming- all consuming blood lust that would control his very existence from this moment forward. She appeared at Vasille’s side.“You should rest now, you’ll be changing soon, you’re going to need your strength. Your body will need to be fed soon. Very soon.” She smiled and pulled her hand away.

“He will need to feed soon my love. What then?”
Vasille Vladu slowly circled the trembling Anton Sipe, eying him with an almost humorous look. His dark piercing blue eyes slowly raised to meet hers.
“We will appease his hunger Nastasia.” He folded both arms behind his back and turned to face the door.
“And then we will tend to more pertinent business.”
She came up behind him and stared out into the cold dark night.
“Him again then is it My love?” She asked.
“I can feel him Nastasia. It is faint. Almost like a dying heartbeat. But I know he is out there. In France I believe.”
He turned to look down at Sipe. now the look was more of pity.
“Help him feed for the first time, and then we leave for Paris.” He said.
“What of Paris my Love?”
“We go to Paris to find Chapel. We will find him and I will punish him for his treachery. Now Nastasia, feed the underling. We have a long journey ahead of us.”

December 29th 1944, Paris France.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Her dark eyes darted nervously back and forth, as she made her way down the busy sidewalk, after two years of spying on the German army Marie Clavette knew well and good when she was being followed. She’d been feeling it for the past seven blocks. But perhaps most disturbing of all was the fact that every time she would look back there was nothing there. It wasn’t Germans- she just didn’t get that impression, she’d been around them enough to know when the bastards were behind her, even heavily damaged- Paris was still her town and she knew how to lose someone here. But this, this was different, and it filled her with a sense of dread, and it wasn't long before her worst fears were realized as a force like she‘d never felt before swept her up and plucked her like a flower from the streets of her beloved Paris. It wasn’t until hours later when she awoke in a strange place that she didn’t recognize. She got up and stumbled over to the window and tried to look out to see where she was. There were trees as far as the eye could see.
she gathered that she was somewhere in the country. And when the door behind her slowly swung open that sense of certain dread returned to her.
“Come here child.” The dark ominous voice echoed through the large room.
She hesitated. Slowly leaning forward to peer through the darkness.
“Monsieur? Hello? Do I know you?” She asked.
“No. You do not. Come here, if I wanted to harm you I would have done it already.”
She slowly moved forward as the form of Vasille Vladu came into view.
“I seek information from you. About a man. A particular man.”
Behind him just beyond the open doorway she could make out the vague image of Sipe’s blood red eyes cutting through the darkness, they seemed to tear through her flesh and it gave her a chill. Her eyes nervously raised to meet Vasille Vladu’s.
“A man? Monsieur?”
“Tall, dark, muscular broad shoulders long black hair that falls down to his shoulders. Dark deep penetrating eyes. His name is Chapel.”
“I do not believe that I know such a man Monsieur.” She answered nervously.
He silently glided past her stopping in front of the window staring out into the dark French countryside.
“You used to spy on the Germans for the French resistance I believe, did you not mademoiselle Clavette?”
She didn’t answer.
“Well I too have spies mademoiselle, and just two nights ago MY spies saw you in the company of such a man at the café Le Jardin Des Cygnes.” Vasille kept his back to her waiting for her reply.
“Oh. You are talking about Monsieur Simon, he started a conversation with me over dinner, he told me he would be returning to America soon. But first he had business in London.”
“His name is Chapel, not Simon, so Mademoiselle- when exactly did he leave for London?”
She tried to focus her attention on the question instead of looking into Sipe’s lifeless stare.
“I believe. He left the morning after our meeting monsieur. I believe he said the next morning.”
He walked away from her and closed the door behind him. He turned to face Sipe and Nastasia before glancing back at the closed door. Sipe was quivering with anticipation. Nastasia looked on with great curiosity, he pulled them closer to him.
“She will sleep soon, then you will return her to Paris, and then find shelter near the tower before dawn. I will join you there tomorrow evening.”
A sinister smile began to spread across Sipe’s black lips. As he stared at the closed door. Nastasia gave him a troubled look before returning her attention to Vasille.
“And Nastasia?” he said.
She and Sipe both looked up at him.
“Marie Clavette is not to be harmed, do you understand? She is not livestock. She is the only person that can lead us to Chapel. If you must- find food elsewhere. She has lied to me, she will go to him where ever he is. And we will follow her. If you harm her, you will pray for the devil to take whatever is left of you.”
He turned to walk away.
“Be ready when she falls asleep. Get her back to Paris.”
He turned away from them walking toward the two glass doors he pushed them open and walked through, leaving Nastasia alone with Sipe. They turned and entered the room where Marie Clavette was now sleeping.
“Lets get her to the tower.” She told him “We need time to seek shelter, there are still many American soldiers roaming the streets of Paris this night. You mustn’t be seen.”
Sipe lowered his head- his eyes cutting through Nastasia’s back, he loved her but at the same time hated what she’d turned him into.
“Like anybody would recognize me now.” He hissed under his breath.
She came out of the front door carrying Marie Clavette. Sipe gave her an impatient look. Before glancing around the front of the chateau.
“So are we to carry her back to Paris then?” He smirked.
She nodded towards a four door black sedan.
“The closer proximity that we live near humans the more we must assimilate their ways to blend in. You used to be a soldier, so tell me you don’t know how to drive.” she threw him the keys.
“I was in the infantry.” He threw the keys back to her “You drive”
They laid Marie in the back seat, and she slid into the driver seat, Many of the roads and bridges leading into Paris were either damaged or destroyed by German bombs but she knew a back way in that wasn’t being patrolled by soldiers on either side. Paris was free again so it wouldn’t be difficult to slip into the city car or no car. They just had to be wary of soldiers. She drove the seventeen miles to the city limits before stopping to ponder the situation, the tower wasn’t that far off now so they could reach it easily on foot. But carrying a body might attract the wrong kind of attention, still not trusting Sipe’s ravenous appetite, she decided to carry the sleeping Marie Clavette while he scouted ahead, when halfway to the tower neither realized that they had actually attracted the very worst attention, the very man they had come to find had now found them first. They scurried along the dark empty street with Chapel shadowing their every move, but it wasn't until he was absolutely certain that they were carrying the body of Marie Clavette that he became fully enraged.
Nastasia was the first to feel his presence, the anger in the air around them told her that this was not someone who would be trifled with. She stopped and looked around and the rooftops, softly calling for Sipe to rejoin her. Moments later he appeared by her side. She turned to look at him still cradling Marie Clavette in her arms.
“He is here, close by watching us. She is more to him than just a pretty face.” She said.
Sipe looked around the rooftops studying every shadow most carefully.
“Perhaps she is his donor?” Sipe asked inquisitively.
Hers eyes fixated on the rooftop directly above them. A tall steeple shaped roof.
“No. she means much more to him than food. He is much too strong for the two of us, come let us get her to the tower, we must hurry, he is very close.” she said.
He swept down on them like an angry wind knocking Sipe off of his feet, sending him flying several yards through the air landing hard against a brick wall.
Nastasia became startled, causing her to drop the limp body of Marie Clavette, instinctively she bared her canines and began to hiss at him. From under his coat Chapel had hidden something quite unexpected for a vampire to be carrying, he produced a short sword, and when the unsuspecting Nastasia jumped forward and with one smooth stroke he removed her head sending it falling into the Seine river. But as he knelt by Marie Clavette’s side- he’d forgotten about Sipe who had just witnessed him removing Nastasia’s head. Angered, Sipe attacked catching him off guard and before Chapel knew it he was all over Marie Clavette burying his teeth into her throat mercilessly ripping her apart like an angry animal. He came to her as Sipe ran into the shadows. And as Chapel cradled Marie Clavette’s now lifeless body in his arms he could hear Sipe’s cold voice echoing down the empty street. .
“You killed mine, So I killed yours. Eye for an eye Chapel. Be seeing you again. Vasille Vladu says hello.”
December 29th, Chateau De l'obscurité, 17 miles outside Paris France.
Vasille Vladu’s anger resounded along the empty hallways of the Chateau, his deep voice shouting- then caring little about who might hear the tirade. Strangely though the underling Sipe stood unmoved, unaffected by the anger Vasille Vladu displayed at him. Instead Sipe began to raise his own angry voice, yelling back at Vladu leaving him slightly surprised.
“I thought I made it clear, No one was to harm Marie Clavette! I wanted to face Chapel at a time of my own choosing Sipe -your treachery will surely bring him here!” Vasille Vladu yelled.
“My treachery? It was he who struck first by taking Nastasia’s head! Have you no feelings about that Vasille? I took an eye for an eye, my treachery? Do you not feel MY rage Vasille Vladu? She loved YOU not me, and yet I saw fit to avenge her, while you tremble at the very mention of Chapels name, I took action, so what if he comes? let him I say! So what will you do devil? Cower in the corner like a frightened school boy?”
He’d barely gotten the last word from his lips when an outraged Vasille Vladu struck him down viciously. Battering Sipe with a relentless attack, slashing at him with talon like fingernails. And yet each time- Sipe would get up and come back for more, just to be battered again. Finally bloodied and beaten Vasille Vladu wrapped his cold undead fingers around Sipe’s throat and lifted him into the air.
“And now underling- you shall pay for your insolence, now I shall remove your pitiful existence from this world-” Vasille Stopped in mid sentence. He cocked his head to one side, somewhat puzzled. Sipe’s black and reddened lips slowly spread into a sly smile and he began to cackle incessantly as though he had completely taken leave of his senses. Suddenly Vasille Vladu could feel the discomfort growing inside of him.
“And what are you to do with me Vasille Vladu? Kill me? Have not you and Nastasia already taken any resemblance to what I once had to any normal life? Have you not already killed me? Made me into the animal that I have become? Go on then Vampire God! Finish what you have started!” Sipe spat in his face.
It was all he needed to make Vasille loosen his grip ever so slightly, and suddenly Sipe lurched forward clawing and biting with every ounce of anger and venom he possessed, with all his strength- finally sinking his teeth into Vasille’s shoulder causing him great pain and even more anger. He slammed Sipe’s body down onto the cold marble floor and began to beat on him even more relentlessly than before, and still Sipe’s insane cackling caused him to stop. The temperature seemed to drop drastically as Vasille slowly began to scan the dark room cautiously. He was getting stronger with each passing night but still wasn’t at full strength, and most certainly not ready for what he knew was coming for him.
Sipe’s laughter slowly subsided as he began to make pathetic gurgling sounds in between sentences, the blood spraying from his lips with every word.
“Can you feel that Vasille? Heeeessss Coming forrrrr yoooou!! Hehehehehehehehehe-- HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!“
He stood abruptly and walked to the window. No. He wasn’t ready yet. Another time Chapel another time.
He pushed the double glass door open and left the cackling Sipe behind him.
He didn't have to see him to know that he was there, it was obvious that there was another of his kind present, but it wasn't Vasille Vladu, a much smaller male, the same one that killed Marie Clavette. He was curled up in a ball in the corner, almost in a fetal position. He sat up abruptly when Chapel approached. The moonlight came through the window and he could see his red eyes. The sly smile reappeared across his black lips. He began to giggle.
“Well, well, we meet again, Chapel is it? Well Chapel- you missed the party. Sad to say, king Vladu left early. I think he’s afraid of what you’ll do to him. What you’ve already done to him at least once or twice before I suspect. Ay Chapel?”
He didn’t answer, he stood in front of the door where moments ago Vasille had beat his hasty retreat. His arms were both calmly folded behind him. Sipe knew right then that this one wouldn’t be so easily unsettled by his implied insanity.
“You two have a history do you?”
Chapel didn’t answer. Sipe slowly began to piece together the startling revelation.
“Hmmmmm. Related perhaps?”
Sipe staggered to his feet, slowly trying to move in behind Chapel.
“Ahhhhhh. He made you didn't he?”
Chapels hand grabbed his throat choking his words off. Mmmmmmm. This one was much stronger- now he understood why Vasille had chosen to wait. He turn his head now looking him square in the eyes.. Any previous hint of humor had now left Sipe’s face.
And then as suddenly as he grabbed him, he let go, letting the small vampire fall to the cold marble floor gasping for breath. He stepped around him walking out onto the balcony, Sipe once again struggled to his feet. He slowly reached a finger out to touch him but pulled back at the last second.
“Soooo. What then? You gotta score to settle have you?”
Chapel’s dark eyes cast him a cold sideways glance.
“What Vasille Vladu and I are to each other is of no concern to you- insect. What you need concern yourself with at the moment is what I should do with You.” He turned to face Sipe.
“Ohhhh yeah. I killed your girl. Didn’t I? well you DID kill mine first.”
Chapel turned to face him fully, slowly walking towards him, when the distant howls of a pack of dogs stopped him. He turned once again to face the balcony. it appeared as though he wasn’t the only one who hunted Vasille Vladu this night. Sipe crawled up behind him, looking up first at Chapel and then to the sounds of the howling dogs.
“Hmmm. Appears as though Vasille is causing a bit of a fuss out there, aye Chapel?” He giggled.
He didn’t answer. he listened quietly as the sounds of angry men and animals echoed throughout the cold dark French countryside. He ignored Sipe’s incessant rambling until finally he turned to look down at him. He slowly backed him into the corner.
“I will deal with you at a time of my choosing insect, this night I have more pressing matters that require my attention.” He said.
He left Sipe cowering in the corner to ponder his pending fate and began to follow the sounds of howling and shouts of angry men hidden deep within the darkness, knowing full well that when he came close enough to Vasille Vladu he would simply be able to feel it. he stepped out from behind the tall farm house to listen to the direction of the hunting pack. he knew that Vasille Vladu would be in the opposite direction, there he would find him in the woods. He pressed on farther and farther, deeper into the trees. Letting Vasille’s own presence guide him to his location, until finally behind him the howling seemed to be fading in the distance, he stepped into the clearing and there standing all alone amongst the remnants of bomb damaged house’s was a single structure which looked like a two story barn. he could feel him even stronger now, Vasille Vladu was closer than ever before. he stepped into the large opening and closed his eyes. he was above him.
“I didn’t want to believe that you were strong enough to find me so quickly.”
He could hear Vasille Vladu’s cold voice softly echoing through the structure. but offered no response.
“You have come for a reckoning then have you?” Vasille was stalling.
Again Chapel offered no response.
“You still carry around with you memories of the past as do I, you can not forget or forgive what I have done to you, nor can I forgive what you have done to me.. So here we are Chapel. So? what are we to do now?”
He could feel Chapels anger rising slowly. he moved down towards the floor inching his way closer until finally stepping out into the moonlight that shone down through the doorway. he could see Chapels eyes. cold. dark. Piercing. and very angry.
“Hello brother.” Vasille said.
Chapel slowly moved forward.
“Your treachery on this earth ends tonight Vasille. this time. for good.”
Romania, December 25th, 1590.
He hadn’t even removed the bastard sword from his waist when he’d first heard her call out his name. his eyes focused on the rooms upstairs. “Vasille” it had to be him, and he had returned to feed on his mother. He could feel his lungs burning inside of his chest, he was running- almost frantically up the stone stairwell that wound its way up through the two story house. He could clearly hear the echoes of his mother’s screams as they reverberated throughout the walls, he almost jumped through the air throwing himself against the heavy wooden door, and as it burst open, he could see her lying on the floor, still, his half brother Vasille crouched over her, his eyes seemed almost inhuman as he turned to face Chapel.
He was smiling, his mothers fresh blood running down his crimson lips and onto his chin. he was laughing under his breath.
“Your mother was delicious Brother.” He laughed wickedly.
“Vasille! you monster! what have you done?”
He slowly rose to his feet his eyes never leaving his half brother Nicolae. He stared in shocked disbelief down at the now dead body of his mother.
“So. It would appear as though you now have a decision to make brother. In a short time she’ll turn, she will become like me, so you have to kill her or kill me, but you have to do it now, choose one but you can’t kill us both.” Vasille laughed.
Chapel stared down at her body briefly and then back up at Vasille Vladu. Slowly moving forward, retrieving a hammer and wooden stake from the night table. Now his eyes were completely focused on Vasille. Who had fully turned to face him.
“As you can see- brother, I have been expecting your return, but even I never suspected you cowardly enough to attack my mother, so I guess I’ll have to kill you first.” He growled at Vasille.
But rather than face his angered brother, he swiftly bolted out the two glass double doors and over the side of the balcony and out into the cold dark Romanian night.
“Ne vom intalni din nou…. Brother.” He said almost under his breath.
He bent down and cradled his mother’s body in his arms and rose to his feet. His half brother had officially become a monster, and had to be stopped before others were to be left dead in his wake. He carried her down stairs where he almost gently laid her body on a table, he pointed the wooden stake over her heart- his eyes tearing up now rolled skyward.
“God.. Forgive me.”
He hammered the stake deep into her chest. He stood over her for a time, before placing a second wooden stake in his inside coat pocket and then returning to the entrance to the house.
He walked across the wooden floor spilling the oil lamps fuel as he went, stepping out of the door as he lit it and pausing to watch the flames spread and then climb the sides of the walls. Within minutes the entire structured had become engulfed in the sea of fire, knowing in his heart that he would never return here and knowing fully well what he now had to do. He walked into the woods almost in a daze, and reached the edge of the lake before he realized that he was being followed, she stepped through the tree’s and stopped at the edge of the woods. He drew in a deep breath before turning to face her. He knew without looking- that it was the female that had turned Vasille into the monster that he had now had become. Her name was Afina, she was beautiful, or at least that was the illusion, long black hair, beautiful face, perfect body, but in reality all she was to Chapel was just another monster.
And yet there was something in the back of his mind was taunting him, “To catch a monster, you must be willing to become one.”
“I have been watching you.” she said.
“I know you have.”
“So sad about your- mother. So sad.”
To Afina’s surprise, he refused to back away when she approached him, even more strangely, he seemed almost willing to allow her to feed on him, she drew closer, young Chapel refused to move, Even when her canines bared. He exposed his throat to her, allowing her to bite him. His knees buckled but he refused to fall, instead pulling her in closer gritting his teeth as she fed, She didn't know why, and once she started she didn't care. That is until she tried to pull away after she felt the curious tingle in her chest.
When she saw him thrust the wooden stake into her heart fully they both staggered backwards and fell to the ground. He struggled to his feet and slowly began to circle her, remembering the bastard sword that he had never removed from his waist. He slowly pulled it from his its scabbard remembering his mothers screams, the demonic- unfamiliar look of blood lust in his half brothers eyes. Knew that he himself would soon become one of them. But unlike them- vowing before the god above, that he wouldn’t allow the devilish desires to consume him, though undead he would become, he vowed too, that he would never stop until he had come face to face once again with Vasille Vladu and purged his existence from the earth.
He raised the blade of the sword up above her neck and with a smooth long stroke he removed her head. He drove a long wooden spike into the ground near the water, and impaled her head onto it clearly in view of where he knew Vasille would find it. He had always been drawn here to this place since they were children, he had always loved this lake so, and even though the water posed a serious danger to Vasille now, Chapel knew that eventually he wouldn’t be able to resist the urge to return to this place and he would find Afina’s remains and the message he would leave for him.
“We will meet again…. Brother.”
He removed a white handkerchief from his pocket and tied it around his neck. Now he would return to the woods and wait for the inevitable. She had taken more than enough to turn him.
December 29th, 1944.
He had hunted him through three whole centuries and into a forth, and while he had come close to causing the extinction of Vasille Vladu on several occasions, he had never quite gotten just the right opportunity to rid the world of his brother’s curse until now. Now though- there they were face to face, three hundred and fifty four years after the fact. The murderer of his mother, the man, the monster that he had hunted for so long now stood before him. This time he would ensure that there would be no resurrection. He silently circled him never speaking a word. And when he smelled the slightest hint of fear he knew that he finally had him.
“Still you cling to the remnants of a long dead past. Still you thirst for revenge for your mother. Still you long for my demise. But what of those you took from me through these many years Nicolae? Are they not worthy of my revenge on you? For me it isn’t. personal.”
Chapel said nothing as he continued slowly circling him, Vasille Vladu moved until his back was against the wall and he could retreat no further. He squinted and bared his canines and made a hissing sound, but Chapel remained unmoved. Until without warning he brutally attacked him with all of the venom and anger he could muster. Vasille would try to defend himself but quickly realized that he had been away for too many years and it was only a matter of time. Battered and weak he lay in a pile of hay as Chapel removed the kerosene lantern from the support post in the middle of the barn and began to pour the liquid from it. His eyes never left Vasille Vladu as he lit the match and tossed it into the hay - almost instantly the fire consumed him.. His screams echoed through the night air as Chapel watched in silent indifference as the building burnt to the ground with him inside it. This time there would be no resurrection.
He watched from the distance as people came to try to contain the blaze, and when he could no longer feel his brothers presence he knew that finally he was gone. But there was soon a new feeling around him, somewhere close. A feeling of loss, of hopelessness, of anger and resentment. He recognized them as feelings that he too at least at one time had felt though the years. He turned to look through the dark woods, there at the very edge of his perception was the presence. And through the cold night air he could hear Sipe’s voice coming through the tree’s as though it were riding the wind.
“Nice fire Chapel. Is he gone then?”
He turned to look back at the waning light from the flames. He stared for a moment. Before slowly nodding to the affirmative.
He stared silently down into the fire now barely visible, the voices of those that had been fighting it, screaming at each other through the darkness.
“Finally.” He muttered.
“And what of the others like us?”
“Others?”
“Well. There are others like us out there in the cold cruel world. Isn’t there Chapel?”
“More than a few I’ve heard.”
“So what’s it like then? Never knowing the sun, always hiding, running from the world, just beyond the shadows. It won’t be much of a life that I have ahead of me will it? I mean I only ask you because you‘re the obvious expert.”
Chapel turned to face the cold voice pondering the question.
“Do not confuse what you have with a life. You’re life was never yours in the first place. You just never realized it, no one ever does.”
Down to the Ashes Parts 1 - 4 (Revised )
Berlin Germany, December 28th 1942.
Twilight. It is the time of magic for your kind. It is cold here. Dark. The perfect setting for you, the sun is buried deep within the belly of slow rolling snow clouds, and is of little consequence. On this evening, It is a familiar burning that you feel deep inside of you that brings you out into the world of humans. It is at a time when the worlds thoughts are mostly plagued by the ravages of war, there are soldiers everywhere, mistrust runs rampant in the Nazi party and they are suspicious of everyone. Especially strangers. And yet you have been here for three nights now and have gone largely unnoticed. And it is here amongst the bustling streets that you see her. She is crossing the street now. Tall. Blond. Beautiful. You. Must have her.
So you follow behind but not too closely. You stalk her. Hunt her. And just when the time is right you allow her to see you. Your eyes meet as she enters the hotel and immediately heads for the stairs. But you are a man of special talents and you are waiting for her in the dark hallway, and as she slides the key into the lock she turns to see you. The door swings open as she turns. Your hands begin to touch her as she slowly backs into the dark hotel room gently pulling you behind her. The door swings closed just as you put your arms around her and pull her to you. She draws in a deep breath as your lips softly brush against hers. And you begin to undress your prize. She slowly lies down on the bed and your hands begin to roam over every curve of her perfect young body.
She begins to moan softly as you lick her breasts, her legs open willingly, and as you lower yourself down between her thighs you can feel her passion building, her breathing becomes erratic. You can feel her heart pounding. The beautiful warm luscious blood coursing through her veins. You bury you face down next to her neck and she begins to moans softly, arching her back, never once realizing that what she feels gently tugging at the skin around her jugular are fully bared canines. But you then realize that something is wrong, you find yourself unwilling to relent and yet you pull away, it is only then that you fully realize. That it isn't the lure of fresh blood that you hunger for this night deadman. It is the touch of human flesh.
Present Day.
It wasn’t the bitter cold, or the familiar sound of rolling thunder raging against the stormy skies that caused him to stir. Much as in the world of his distant memories and dreams, on this night; it was the faint echoes of human screams that pulled his eyes apart. He stood and slowly moved to the edge of the bell tower. The rain was pounding along the sides of the semi abandoned Delorian Street church. He could almost hear the voice in the back of his mind. “Do not concern yourself with the petty differences of humans Chapel. their cause is lost.” and yet his curiosity pulled him yet again out into the dark and cold rainy night. He followed the sounds a full five blocks away until he’d reached the rooftop of a deserted waterfront warehouse overlooking Piedmont bay. The screams he’d heard had fallen silent, but now something new pulled at his senses, a peculiar smell that he could not outwardly place.
His eyes came to rest on something lying out on the dock near the waters edge. He leapt to the ground and went closer to investigate, and the closer he got, he could see that it was a human body that had been set on fire.The rain had doused most of the flames, but the remains were so charred the body was barely recognizable as human. He drew in a deep breath.
“And I’m the monster.” He thought to himself.
The sound of clinking glass against the ground turned his attention sharply back in the direction of the warehouse. His eyes narrowed and scanned through the dark. Someone definitely running. Cans being kicked, hurried footfalls beating hard against wet concrete. A voice softly cursing aloud as the person lost their balance and fell to the ground.
Within a millisecond, Chapel was on them, pulling at their collar dragging them behind him as he effortlessly scaled the side of the warehouse wall until he’d reached the roof. He threw them hard against the surface. He could see that it was an older man. Thin. Frail. Long dirty gray hair, ragged clothes. His thin boney face- dirty and unshaven, with shaking fingers he nervously pushed the wire rimmed spectacles onto the bridge of his nose.
He pointed nervously towards the edge of the rooftop.
“Hey man. How’d ya do that?”
He didn‘t answer.
“P.P. Please mister. I didn’t see anything. I swear. If you let me live I won’t tell the cops. I swear.”
Chapel knelt down and looked him in the eyes.
“I’m not going to hurt you. I just have a couple of questions. Ok?” he said.
The old man nodded nervously. He helped him to his feet and led him to the edge of the rooftop. He pointed out towards the dock at the smoldering human remains.
“Did you see who did that?” He asked.
He wiped the glasses off on his sleeve and looked up at Chapel.
“Uhhhh. Are you sure you ain’t one of them?”
Chapel almost choked on his laughter when he made a crossing gesture across his chest as if swearing to the frail old man that he wouldn’t harm him.
“I’m not one of them. Okay?” He assured him.
He slowly sank down onto the roof top.
“His name was Chico Jimenez. And yeah I saw who did that to him.” He looked sadly down at the dock.. “It was the same ones that torched Carl and Kimmy.” He told Chapel.
“So. What is your name?”
“Ummmm. Henry. Henry Peete.”
He slowly extended his hand to him.
“Well its nice to meet you Henry, my name is Chapel.”
They found themselves down on Caroll Street, where they stopped at a payphone to call the police to tell them the location of the charred remains of Chico Jimenez. He took Henry Peete to a small rundown diner two blocks away called The Bouncing Burger. They entered just before 10:00 PM, run down didn’t begin to describe it, The walls and ceiling were a smoke stained white, and looked like they still had decorations from the 1950’s. The floors were a yellowish colored linoleum worn thin by years of foot traffic, the table tops and counters were chipped, worn and stained and the faux red leather stools, chairs and benches had definitely seen better days.
Sure it was old but it looked like a million dollars to Henry Peete. The short, pudgy, gray haired waitress led them to a booth near the window. For the most part they were alone except for a couple of people sitting at the counter. Henry Peete cautiously sat down in the booth and Chapel slid in the spot directly across from him.
“Order anything that you want Henry. Its on me.” He told him.
“Ummm. Well. Do ya got Steaks?”
The waitress silently nodded.
“And baked taters?”
Again she nodded.
“Ok.” Henry said. “I’ll have that and a tall glass of iced tea if you have it.”
She looked at Chapel who held his hand up.
“Nothing for me thank you.” he told her.
She gathered the menus and headed for the kitchen. Henry looked at Chapel, and then turned his head to look out the window to see what he was looking at. There was a young girl across the street who was nervously pacing back and forth. And finally when she’d seen them watching her she slowly moved down the street looking back over her shoulder at them.
“Oh. You noticed her too did ya?” He asked.
Chapel smiled.
“ Yes. She’s been following me every time that I step outside. For the past three nights. Tonight she’s been following us since we left Mott Street. Do you know who she is Henry?”
“Yeah I’ve seen her around a few times I think she was a friend of Kimmy’s. Her name is Emma or something like that.” He said
The waitress brought Henry his dinner and Chapel sat and watched him curiously as he devoured the whole meal in what seemed like seconds.
“So Henry. Tell me something, if these men have burned three people alive why hasn’t anyone told the police yet?” He asked.
He shrugged his shoulders.
“Oh the police know all about what happened to Carl and Kimmy. I just don’t think they give two cents of a rats ass what happens to street people. To them. Its just less garbage for them to wade through.”
Chapel leaned back in his seat and stared out the window at the rain soaked city, and it was then he saw the long black town car with three men in it parked across the street. It appeared as though the girl wasn't the only one that was following them.
Chapel paid for the meal and together, he and Henry Peete exited the diner. They walked about another block when the young girl slowly approached them. The long black town car shadowing their every move. She eyed it nervously as she stood in front of them.
“Uhh, I need to talk to you.” she told Chapel. “in private.”
He and Henry both looked at each other.
“Henry is a good guy. Very trust worthy. whatever you need to say to me, you can say in front of Henry.”
“It ain’t him.” she cast a concerned look at the black town car.
“So its them then. Well maybe I should go have a chat with whoever is cowering in that car.”
He turned and began to walk across the street towards the town car, becoming more angry with each step. The lights came on. The tires squealed and the car sped past him. He turned around and she was standing in the middle of the street in front of him. He stopped as she leaned forward and whispered to him.
“I. Know. What you are.” she pulled back and smiled. ”I want to hire you to do a job for me. I know where there is a lot of money and I can pay. I want you to get those pricks that burned Kimmy.”
Her voice trembled, her eyes swelled with tears and her lips drew tight as she stared down the empty street.
“Those fucking bastards.” She began to cry.
He brushed her stringy black hair out of her eyes. She was too young. Too beautiful. It was too soon for her to be lost to anger and hate. And as he looked at Emma and Henry Peete an idea began to form in his mind.
He walked them six blocks north to a busy intersection where he flagged down a taxi. All three got in and Chapel instructed the driver to take them to Babylon Towers in Harkan Heights. Emma Looked him up and down nervously and then over at Henry Peete who was smiling from ear to ear. She turn back to Chapel.
“So what is this Babylon Towers?” She asked.
“I have a place there. I go there sometimes when I want to be alone.” He told her.
The taxi cab slowly began to wind its way up into the hills of Harkan Heights. The buildings were considerably older than in the newer sections of Kings Harbor, and the streets would become narrower. The closer they came to Ashton Street where Babylon Towers stood amongst various other buildings that were of equal heights as the two towers, each one, 25 floors reaching straight up into the sky.
Chapel instructed the driver to pull up to the curb just one block from Ashton street in front of a small bodega. He then turned to Emma and Henry.
“I have a place up at the very top of the left tower on the 25th floor, there are no other immediate neighbors on that floor other than the person that I hired to take care of it and pay the bills for me. so it is private. There is working electricity and running water but where you will be staying you will have to buy food.”
He produced a small roll of bills and handed them to Emma and told her and Henry to go into the bodega to get enough supplies to last them a few days. He and the taxi would wait for them.
It wasn’t exactly the Ritz, it was quite old in fact, but nice, clean and well kept. He ushered them into the elevator that took them to the 25th floor, and when the doors opened they took six steps forward into a small enclosed space where another security door was. He motioned them forward and showed them the security code.
“I’ll write it down for you both when we get inside but don’t ever lose it.” he told them.
They both nodded and once inside he introduced them to a young lady named Peaches who as it turned out was a longtime associate of Chapel's whom he’d trusted implicitly.
“Peaches takes care of this place for me. If you need anything you go through her.” he told them.
Together they gave them a brief tour of the place, the rooms were large and spacious, the ceilings were quite tall, the furnishings almost had a colonial feel to them. The floors were covered in a material that Emma was not familiar with, but it looked almost like a grayish colored marble. “Definitely a stone of some type.” she thought. they showed them the kitchen and the bathroom and instructed them to go bathe and eat and then they would sit down and discuss what was happening to the street people of Kings Harbor. In particular to what had already happened to Chico, Karl and Kimmy. Although something seemed oddly out of place to Emma she did trust Chapel and she and Henry Peete both did as instructed, both bathed while Peaches and he searched for some cleaner clothes for them to wear. When Henry Peete emerged from the bathroom he found some clean trousers along with a freshly pressed shirt lying over the back of a chair next to the vanity
He was sitting with one leg draped over the other in another chair in the corner reading a newspaper. His eyes slowly rose to see Henry Peete. He motioned for the clothes.
“They belonged to a former friend of mine who used to live here. He’s about your size, see if they fit Henry.”
He nodded and disappeared back into the bathroom, He could hear him muttering to himself softly cursing. Moments later he appeared at the doorway fully cleaned and clothed.
“Been a long time since I’ve felt human Mr. Chapel.” Henry said.
He smiled and slowly raised his eyes to meet Henry‘s.
“Me too Henry. Me too.”
After dinner they sat and told Chapel and Peaches everything that they knew about what had happened to their three friends. Emma spoke mostly about a vicious drug dealer named Theo Cousins who had sent a group of his enforcers down into the Bettenhurst District to retrieve a stolen duffel bag of drugs and a brief case full of money.
It had been rumored that the thieves hid it in Bettenhurst and some of the street people had found both and were intent on keeping them for themselves. Someone fingered Kimmy because he had found the drugs and money and re hid them. When he’d thought things quieted down he would go back later and retrieve the money and dispose of the drugs which he’d had no use for. That was until someone ratted him out along with his two friends Karl and Chico Jimenez. That was when the three enforcers showed up and tracked down Kimmy and Karl and torched both of them. Followed quickly by Chico Jimenez. And now Henry and Emma seemed to be next on the hit list, because Emma had confided in whom she thought was a friend that she believed that she’d had figured out where Kimmy stashed the money and the drugs. Now Chapel leaned back in his seat. He looked over at Peaches and then Emma and Henry.
“Just who did you confide in Emma?” He asked.
Emma leaned forward.
“Only person I told is a kid named ‘Pipes’ I didn’t say anything to anybody else except him.”
Now Henry slowly leaned forward, slightly cocking his head to one side. Curiously looking from Chapel back to Emma. He softly began to rub his chin, staring blankly forward. Chapel rose to his feet and walked over and knelt down in front of Henry Peete.
“What is it Henry? What are you thinking?” He asked.
“Mr. Chapel. I think I know this Pipes kid.” He looked over at Emma. “Tall. Thin. Greasy blond hair Emm?”
She slowly nodded.
“Yeah? And he’s always singing?”
Again she nodded. Henry turned back to Chapel.
“Mr. Chapel. That kid was with them when they Torched Chico Jimenez.” He said.
Chapel rose to his feet and slowly walked to the double glass French doors and opened them and stepped out onto the balcony. He was shortly joined by Henry Peete and Emma.
“So if I can find this kid Pipes, then he can lead me to the enforcers, who will lead me to this Theo Cousins person.” He turned to face Emma and Henry.
“You two try to stay inside as much as possible, at least until I return. Go back inside now, get some rest.”
He ushered them both back inside, and left some last minute instructions with Peaches and she showed each Henry and Emma to their rooms closing the door behind each of them, she turned to face Chapel who was already back out on the balcony, he turned to face her
“Lock the doors behind me.” He told her. “I’ll be back before dawn.”
After locking the bedroom door Emma slowly began to undress for bed. A thousand thoughts raced through her mind at once. At first glance she’d thought that perhaps Chapel had been some kind of hit man. But upon further consideration she’d concluded that there was simply more to it than that. She stripped down to nothing but her blouse and sat on the edge of the bed dangling her legs over the side. This place, was so odd, the furnishings seemed so old, but kept up. Her bed was a large brass four poster that looked like something out of another century. Old- yet still new looking. The whole picture, even the woman named Peaches, the whole image had this dark, cold and damp feeling to it. She stood up and walked across the floor to the double windows and swung them open to take in the cold night air.
She decided to leave them open for the air and returned to the bed and climbed under the covers, and slowly drifted off to sleep, to where the dark images that troubled and confused her, continued to dance through her head. She tossed and turned for two hours when something woke her, a brief flash of lightning lit up the room, and for a split second she’d thought that she’d caught sight of something perched on the brass frame at the foot of her bed. She sat up abruptly when she’d clearly seen him. He sat there perched on the brass railing at the base of the bed frame. His finger s curled up around the post. He sat squatted on his feet, and she thought that he looked like a cross between a bat and a vulture. He was short, thin and wiry. And he had long stringy brown hair, and Emma thought that he smelled most foul. And as the room flashed with lightning once more she could have sworn that his eyes were turning a brilliant hue of red. And he smiled through bared canines.
“Why helloooo. Aren’t you. Just. Lovely. My name is Sipe. And who might you be?”
It didn’t take him long to find what he was looking for- once he’d reached the district of Bettenhurst just before 1:00 AM. The sidewalks all along the length of Banning Street, seemed to be bristling with activity even at such an odd hour, all night liquor stores were still open, there were three 24 hour pawn merchants still open, and street walkers and hustlers of every type imaginable were out in force plying their trade. Along with John’s, marks and all of the innocent bystanders who just happened to be caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. And the endless sea of Taxi cabs roaming the early morning blvd, each looking for their own brand of prey.
All completely oblivious to what roamed and watched from the rooftops that towered above them. Banning street was alive and well with the commerce of possessed people from every walk of life, but there was one possessed individual in particular that brought him here. He sat perched at the corner of the building that overlooked where Banning Street intersected with Dawn Avenue. And as he made his way down to ground level he knew that he had found what he was looking for. He stepped towards the mouth of the alley still standing enough in the shadows to not be seen before he was ready. Then he heard the unmistakable sounds of someone singing, and Chapel knew that he’d come to the right place.
Tall, thin, greasy, shoulder length blond hair. Torn blue jeans with an old red hooded sweat shirt. Standing on the corner of Dawn, a tin cup on a wooden box in front of him, his eyes closed tightly, fingers twitching at his sides as his head bobbed and swayed with the song that he was singing.
“Lord. I know you love meeee. in spite of my wretched ways. My soul has been torn and scattered. And I have lost my way”
Chapel walked directly into his line of sight and stared at him from across the street. Almost instinctively, Pipes opened his eyes to find his menacing stare tearing right through him. He tried to close his eyes and started singing again, only seconds later he reopened them to see that Chapel had disappeared. He slowly leaned forward and looked both ways up and down the sidewalk before gathering up the few coins that had been dropped into the tin can and put them into his pocket.
He turned and headed east along Banning Street finally stopping at an alley beside of Elgin’s pawn broker’s shop. He ducked inside of the mouth of the alley and slowly poked his head out to look down the sidewalk. The large menacing fellow with the long black hair was nowhere to be seen. He pressed his back to the brick wall slowly breathing a sigh of relief. Just as something jerked him off of his feet and began pulling him up the side of the wall with amazing speed. He found himself flying through the air finally landing with a thud on the cold tar roof top. He rolled over onto his side trying to catch his breath, and he saw Chapel walking towards him.
His feet pulled up under him as he tried to crawl away, Chapel dead on his heels grabbed his ankle and drug him along behind him to the edge of the building. Pipes tried to kick at him to break free, but had little or no effect. Finally he found himself cowering at the corner of the rooftop. If he was to escape he would have to jump, and being all of 15 floors up that wasn’t an option that he cared to consider. Chapel was kneeling in front of him now.
“Relax Pipes. I just have a few questions for you. Answer them truthfully and you won’t be harmed.”
His fingers began to shake uncontrollably as he looked up at him. Slowly he nodded to the affirmative, he would cooperate, tell him anything he would, that he thought he might want to hear. Anything to avoid being dropped from 15 stories up to the pavement below.
“I want Theo Cousin’s enforcers. The men in the black sedan.. The ones that you gave Emma up to. Tell me where to find them. Tell me and you live and breathe to sing your songs another day.”
He silently considered Chapel’s generous offer.
“I. I’m supposed to meet them soon, to tell them where Emma is hiding.” He told him.
“Where?”
“The corner. Of Seventh and Avenue C.”
“What time?”
“Two o’clock this morning.”
He lightened his grip on him and turned to leave just as Pipe’s quivering voice offered him a question.
“Hey man.”
He stopped and turned to face him.
“What would’ve happened if I didn’t tell you?”
Chapel stared at him coldly.
“Can you fly?”
He tried to look away blinking nervously as the Vampire turned and walked back towards him.
“Pipes. If they aren’t where you’re telling me they will be. There will be no place in this city where you will be safe from me. So. You’d best start growing feathers. Do you get my meaning?”
He nodded.
“I will come looking and I will find you.”
Again he nodded.
“There will be no place for you to hide from me.. Got it?”
He rose to a standing position and turned towards the edge of the building, leaving Pipes to ponder his fate. He raised both arms almost frantically.
“Wait!”
Chapel turned to face him.
“I think you should know that they do have guns. They may try to- shoot you.”
He stared straight ahead.
“I’m Counting on it.”
He reached the corner of Seventh and Avenue C just before 2:00 AM. The cloud cover had all but engulfed the moon and it was beginning to rain, softly at first. He perched himself on the ledge of the ten story red brick building that housed Havington’s Pharmacy. His eyes slowly began scanning the empty streets below searching for the black town car as seconds later- a lone pair of headlights appeared at the end of Seventh and slowly made their way towards Avenue C. He moved silently along the edge of the rooftop, his eyes never leaving the vehicle as it rolled to a stop in front of Havington’s, inside he could hear the sounds of muffled voice arguing in the vehicle, trying to decide who would have to get out in the rain to look for Pipes. The drivers side door swung open as a tall blonde fellow stepped from the vehicle. He turned his collar up at the slight breeze that began blowing through the rain, his head turning back and forth searching for the kid known as Pipes.
“If I gotta go looking for this little mutt, I’m gonna kick his ass!” He muttered under his breath.
He took three steps into the street before something moving through the air above him caught his attention, and as he turned his head skyward, Chapel had swooped down on him like a hungry bird of prey, carrying him off into the alleyway across the empty street. The other two, emerged from the vehicle with weapons drawn.
“Holy fuck Max! what they hell was that?”
The smaller older fellow shook his head frantically.
“I dunno Clark! But it got Sammy!”
The name had barely crossed his lips when the body came flying towards them from across the street and went crashing head first through the windshield of the black town car.
Chapel appeared in the mouth of the alley and began to move towards them when the one called Max began to open fire on him to no effect. The second gunman had thrown his weapon aside and had beaten a hasty retreat in the opposite direction. Max bravely and yet foolishly tried to stand his ground. he was a bit shorter than Chapel but figured he would make up for the size difference by attacking his body. being a ex boxer- a full out body assault seemed the likeliest plan of attack to him. He squared his shoulders and balled up both fists. as the vampire slowly approached.
“Mister you may be bulletproof, but you’d better be pain proof as well, I’m about to throw you a beating.”
He swung a tight overhand right. which Chapel caught in his palm. stepping into his body he bent Max’s arm backwards at the elbow snapping it into, and as his painful screams began to echo down the empty street.
He stepped in even closer raising both hands one to his chin and one to the back of his head, and with ease began to raise Max off of his feet and held him there up in the air. The screams began to choke off and became gurgling sounds deep in his throat. In one swift movement, he silenced him with a simple snapping of his neck. Staring down the street at the third man who had tripped and fallen, he released Max’s limp dead body as it fell to the ground making a wet thumping sound. Panic stricken Clark had tried to regain his footing, but within seconds Chapel was on him sweeping him off of his feet, moving swiftly into the alley with Clark in tow kicking and screaming behind him. it seemed as though he did all of his best work on the rooftops but in the instance- in the interest of time, he would just this once make an exception. he slammed Clark hard against the wall and raised him off of his feet.
He watched him flailing harmlessly as he held him by the throat, Clark began to make his own gurgling sounds, clawing and making ineffective punching motions trying to break Chapel’s icy grip. a white foam began to build up on his lips as his panic filled eyes stared into Chapel’s.
“Stop struggling. if I wanted you to be dead then you would be dead already. I’m not interested in you Clark, It’s Theo Cousins that I want. tell me where he is and I will let you live.”
“M. M. Morgan Heights?”
“Where in Morgan Heights?”
The breath began to choke up in his throat.
“Teflan Blvd. 318 Teflan Blvd.”
Chapel loosened his grip on him. Clark produced a knife and buried it into his side. he stared at him unmoved and emotionless.
Slowly he removed the knife from his side and stared into Clarks eyes. who looked down at the knifes clean blade. and then in shocked disbelief slowly looked back up at Chapel.
“No. Blood? what the fuck are you man?”
The vampire slowly leaned forward and whispered into his ear.
“I am the monster that walks in your worst nightmares.”
He raised his hand back to his throat, and slowly lifted Clark into the air.
“I am afraid that little stunt changes things, and now I must break our previous arrangement. Too bad Clark, I was going to let you live.”
The tears began to roll down his face as he began to make whimpering sounds.
“There now. there. Die with a little dignity.”
It is at a time when much of the world is locked safely away in its dreams, that you find yourself silently moving through an endless sea of noise and decaying reality that most humans would like to forget that they are actually a part of. Dreams deadman. Dreams are a funny thing really. In dreams a human being can be whatever they wish. In dreams there are those who would possess great strength, while in reality only weakness endures. Great courage, passion, love. Hope. Hope and love for those lost to a world of blindness, hatred and abandonment. But what dreams haunt your world deadman? Are they dreams or nightmares? Asleep? Awake? Ahhh yes. that’s right. Your dream. Is of humanity. Walking freely in the land of the living, shoulder to shoulder with normalcy. Alive. To feel the kiss of sunlight touching your skin. To feel love. To be loved.
To simply know that there is a place where conscience still counts for something. To know that there is still a place for goodness to exist in the hearts of human beings. But these are only dreams deadman, and now it is your reality that you must face. Here. Now. In this world of ugliness. where bearing the burden of conscience is of little or no consequence, nor of love or compassion. These are the entrapment's of a human existence. Living breathing, flesh and blood humans. A world of which you are no longer a viable part of. You are dead here. There are none of those things that exist in dreams in this world of rich and poor. It all boils down to predator and prey. And yet. Still. You endure. You persist. In reaching into the deep darkened recesses of that abyss. In trying to save humanity from itself. But it all must wait for now. For another time. Wake up Chapel. You have arrived. You have a job to do.
Morgan Heights, Friday 3:10 AM
Morgan Heights wasn’t at all what he’d expected it to be, most of the buildings in the neighborhood were in a horrible state of disrepair and seemed to be falling away from their foundations. The few business’s that were still afloat were small groceries, and bodegas and all night liquor stores. There were a few pawn merchants but most were closed for the night. He noticed that there was a stark difference in the twenty story building that stood almost defiantly at 318 Teflan blvd and the small sprawl of urban decay that surrounded it. The stronghold of Theodore Cousins, drug lord, murderer, scoundrel of the lowest order. Scumbag. He stood at the corner of the building, at the very top. Staring down the sides of the smooth surface of Theo Cousins private fortress. All around there was decay, despair, and no doubt a deep burning hunger to survive, all at the feet of lord Theo and his drug minions. He could almost see the street enforcers grinding the bones of the downtrodden beneath their boot heels and he felt a great anger begin to build up inside of him, like a great thirst that needed to be quenched.
He didn’t know in what part of this palace that he would no doubt eventually find Theo Cousins cowering in, but it didn’t matter, he would indeed find him, rip him to shreds and do the world a great service. He turned his attention to the secured roof access door ripping it loose from its hinges with very little effort. As he stepped across the threshold he saw a red light up in the corner of the first landing furiously blinking. No doubt a silent alarm system, he wouldn’t be alone for much longer. He made his way down the first stairwell when the first wave of armed guards appeared at the bottom on the next floor below. He made his first turn and waited patiently for the first hail of gunfire to subside. There were four armed men, and when they first open fire on the target he was at the top of the stairs, when they stopped he was standing directly in front of them smiling- almost pleasantly. They stared in shocked disbelief. Chapel slowly leaned forward.
“Boo.”
They tried to spread out to buy themselves time to reload but it was already too late, the angry vampire was ripping through their flesh with fingernails that seemed as hard and sharpened as steel talons, separating meat from bones, ripping through entrails and flesh sending splatters of fresh blood flying in every direction, leaving the stark white walls bathed in it. Too angry even to stop and feed he was.. An anger so deep. That even the feeding of any bloodlust could never hope to satisfy it. And finally when he’d found himself standing over the last cowering soul, only then did he slightly relent. He knelt down in front of the last man in the stairwell.
“I will give you a purpose now.” He said. “Perhaps the very last purpose that you will ever have in this life or the next.”
He pulled his blood soaked hands up to his chest. Staring up at Chapel in absolute horror.
“Wha- what are you?”
He ignored the question, slowly leaning towards him.
“Where is Theo Cousins hiding in this building? Tell me now. This is your purpose. Lie to me and I will rip you to shreds. Are we clear on all of this?”
He slowly nodded in agreement.
“Three floors down. Theo lives on the whole floor. More. Guards there though.”
“Hmmm. How many exactly?” He paused slightly. “Not that it matters really. I would just like to know how many more men I have to kill before I get to the main course.”
All in all there would turn out to be a grand total of fifteen armed guards waiting for slaughter just three floors below. Plus whatever he would encounter on the way down, plus he would have to factor in the distinct possibility that Theo Cousins might try to run once the alarm had been triggered, but still Chapel clung to the hope that Theo would be just arrogant enough to stay put under the false assumption that he was in all probability impervious to any attacker and was indeed quite safe. He moved down the first hallway largely unchallenged until he reached the next stairwell that would take him to the floor directly below. Three more armed guards would appear, three more would lay in his wake, ripped apart as though they were little more than an annoyance to him. Finally he reached the floor directly above Theo’s living quarters. The armed security force upped the ante and threw another ten armed guards at him, which foolishly tried to attack Chapel two by two. And two by two they were torn apart and left lying in bloody heaps until he reached the final access stairwell that would take him directly down to Theo Cousins stronghold.
At the bottom of the stairs the room was quiet and dark, no gunfire, no people, either they were waiting at the end of the hallway or they had already gotten Theo out. He moved ten feet into the hallway before the first two men stepped into his path and open fire on him, he was on the first quickly, both knees on his chest- a fist full of hair riding his body to the ground, digging his fingernails into his throat, ripping the Adam’s apple out in an instant. He rolled forward into the second gunman, plunging four fingers straight up into his ribcage. He staggered backwards, blinked, slowly dropping the weapon as Chapels icy cold hands gripped at his heart from inside of his chest, he pulled it free and stood emotionless as the body fell lifelessly to the ground. He dropped the organ on the floor next to the last body and proceeded to the next room. Theo Cousins was still here. Now - Chapel could smell him.
The final door seemed to erupt from its hinges and flew across the dark room, there was Theo Cousins cowering behind the bed with a revolver- Instinctively firing as soon as the door flew open. The room fell silent as he slowly glided past him into the bathroom. From inside the bedroom the stunned drug lord could hear the water from the bathroom sink turn on, and then off. Moments passed before Chapel would emerge from the doorway to find a trembling Theo trying desperately to reload the revolver.
“I.I. I’ll kill. You. Man?”
He reached down into the darkness of the bedroom and clutched at his throat and then effortlessly hoisted him into the air. Chapel hesitated, something felt- Strange. The scent in the air. The soft supple skin. He reached over and turned on the light. Theo- as it turned out, wasn’t a ’Theodore’ at all, but instead a ’Theodora” he cocked his head to one side and stared at her curiously.
She was quite slender, small, long flaming red hair and a perfect petite body.
“So. You’re - Theo?”
She smiled through the painful grimaces. He threw her on the bed. She ran her fingers across her throat trying to catch her breath.
“What’s the matter baby? Not what you expected?”
He patiently folded both arms behind his back looking her up and down. Full aware that she already had another revolver hidden beneath her pillow. Her hand inched closer.
“You know. You just went right through all of my guys like a hot knife through butter my man. I could sure use someone like you in my operation.”
Her hand slowly clutched at the revolver under the pillow as she began to move it into full view and fire point blank into Chapels chest. He cocked his head to one side, a sly smile began to form on his lips.
“You know. If you keep trying to murder potential employees, nobody will want to work for you.”
She stared in shock disbelief as he came forward. Leaning slowly- his head now beside hers. He whispered in her ear. She could feel her heart pound against the inside of her chest.
“You do know that I didn’t come here looking for a job don’t you?”
“N. N. No?”
He shook his head no.
“I came here to kill you Theo.”
She began to sob uncontrollably. He raised his forefinger across his lips. As his free hand found its way to her throat.
“Shhhhhhhhh.”
She could feel the air being choked off from her lungs. Her body began to contort, and then spasm violently, finally she felt a sting, perhaps heard a popping sound and then she lay still there on the bed. Her eyes staring blankly at the ceiling. He sat there at the edge of the bed staring at her for a time. No matter how many times he had uncovered it, he always found it interesting, all of the curious shapes and forms that evil chose to hide in. Men, women, and in those rare instances even mere children. He rose to his feet and turned off the light as he exited the bedroom and made his way back to the roof, 4:15 Am, it was time to head back to Babylon Towers.
Epilogue.
As soon as he placed his first foot onto the Balcony at Babylon Towers, he just knew that something had gone very wrong in his absence. And as he opened the double French doors he saw Peaches and Henry Peete both sitting on the sofa together. When she saw him enter the room Peaches slowly rose to her feet. Chapels eyes slowly moved back and forth between her and Henry.
“Where’s Emma?”
Peaches Stared at the floor.
“I went in to wake her this morning to see if she wanted some coffee, when I went into the room both of her windows were open and she was gone. I found this addressed to you on the night stand.”
She handed him an envelope with his name scribbled across the facing. He turned and opened it, slowly removing the paper inside, he unfolded it and began to read.
Chapel:
When I first saw you, my first thought was that you were perhaps an assassin that had come to clean up the streets. My second was, that you were perhaps an angel sent to us by God himself, and although I suspect that my second guess was closer to the truth- I fully realize now that I was wrong, on both counts. I know now what you really are. There was an odd little man that crept into my room tonight, and without so much as a word he showed me exactly what I want, what I need. I am leaving with him, Only because I know that you would never willingly turn me into what I wish to become. Like you, a vampire. I have been hurt, used, neglected, my trust violated, too many times, by too many people, too much pain to bear. No one will ever hurt me again. Not now, Not ever. I hope that you find the peace that you are searching for.
Love Emily.
Peaches and Henry appeared in the doorway behind him, as he stared out into the cold misty morning. Sipe was going to pay for this dearly.
